History of the Human Performance Lab

In 2000, the department of Health and Exercise Science began to transition from a physical education major to an exercise science major. In this year, Dr. Jie Kang and Dr. Jay Hoffman began working in the department. As the two exercise physiologists in the department, they were put in charge of managing the Human Performance Lab (HPL). The one room lab that is currently being used for research used to have 3 separate rooms, but soon after Dr. Kang and Dr. Hoffman came on board the walls were both literally and figuratively knocked down. From this point forward, the HPL was driven by undergraduate students rather than graduate students. The HPL steadily began to gain both equipment and faculty (Dr. Nicholas Ratamess in 2002, Dr. Avery Faigenbaum in 2003, and Dr. Jill Bush-Wallace in 2013) and has been the setting for many successful research studies.
